Peel Regional Land Use Planning Process

Who in Yukon government is doing the consultation?

The consultation process is being coordinated by the Government of Yukon, Department of Energy Mines and Resources (EMR) in collaboration with the First Nation of Nacho Nyäk Dun, Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in, Vuntut Gwitch'in First Nation and the Gwich'in Tribal Council as well as other Yukon government departments.

The consultation process follows Chapter 11 of the First Nation Final Agreements, and by agreement by several parties, including Government of Yukon and four affected First Nations.

The Yukon Land Use Planning Council is a board created by Chapter 11 of the Umbrella Final Agreement. It assists Government of Yukon, Yukon First Nations governments and Regional Planning Commissions coordinate their efforts to conduct regional land use planning.

What is the Government of Yukon's opinion on the Recommended Plan?

The Government of Yukon does not have a position on the Recommended Plan at this time. The Yukon government's position will be developed based on the input received during the consultation process.

Why doesn't the Yukon government just accept the Recommended Plan?

As outlined in Chapter 11 of the First Nation Final Agreements, the Government of Yukon is obligated to consult with the parties of the Plan and affected communities.

Hasn't there already been consultation on the Peel regional land use planning? Why the need for more consultation?

The Peel Watershed Planning Commission conducted consultation on its drafts of the Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan. Chapter 11 of the First Nation Final Agreements, and by agreement by several parties set out the next steps in the plan, including the review currently underway by First Nations and Yukon governments. This is the first time that YG is undertaking consultation on the plan.

When will we have a land use plan for the Peel?

There is no scheduled date for the completion of this regional land use planning process.

What happens after the consultation period ends?

The Government of Yukon and the First Nation parties will review and consider the input provided during the consultation in order to provide guidance to the Peel Watershed Land Use Planning Commission in their work to prepare a Final Recommended Plan for the region.

What happens to the responses received?

Responses received will be reviewed after the consultation and inform the decision making process for the Government of Yukon and the First Nation parties.

All responses received (including those mailed or faxed) will be posted on the consultation website.

Why is the consultation happening in the summer months?

The timeline for the consultation has been established in order to fulfill the commitments made under the Letter of Understanding. The consultation runs until October 1, 2010.

Can people outside Yukon respond? Will responses from outside Yukon be considered?

Yes, anyone can provide responses on Recommended Plan, however, the Government of Yukon and the First Nation parties are particularly interested in hearing Yukoners and people with current interests in the region.

How do I arrange a meeting to share my group’s opinion on the Recommended Plan?

Groups and individuals are encouraged to submit responses online. Letters from groups can be easily uploaded here.

Is there funding available for my group to participate in this consultation process?

There is no specific funding available to support participation in this consultation process. However, the Government of Yukon would like to ensure all interested groups are able to provide input and will work with your group to help resolve any specific challenges.

How long will it take for my response to be posted on the website?

Responses are processed as quickly as possible, but please allow for at least two business days for responses to appear on the website.

It has been longer than two business days, why haven’t my responses been posted?
